Aspirin Reduces Alzheimer’s Risk

If you want to prevent Alzheimer’s, researchers have good news for you. They’ve recently found an easy step you can take to help prevent amyloid beta plaques from building up. And this step may even be something you’re already doing.

You probably know that the buildup of amyloid beta plaques contributes significantly to Alzheimer’s disease. So one way to help avoid the disease is to get brain cells to move waste out of the brain as efficiently as possible.

Believe it or not, our cells contain their own “garbage men,” called lysosomes. Lysosomes are responsible for removing debris from the cells. And this can include amyloid beta. So kicking those lysosomes into high gear can really help the brain.

In a mouse model, researchers found a simple way to stimulate lysosomes: aspirin. Sure enough, the lysosomes did a better job of removing plaque when the mice received a daily dose.

Many people already take a low daily dose of aspirin to help prevent cardiovascular disease. This research indicates that those who do may be getting an additional benefit to their brains.
