How to help garlic drop your blood pressure quickly and safely

We've known about garlic's anti-hypertensive abilities for some time. But new research shows just how effective it can be for lowering blood pressure. No, you don't have to eat a clove a day and scare off everyone around you with your breath. Researchers confirmed that you can get its anti-hypertensive effects by using aged garlic extract. And there's something you can take with it to make it work even better.

For this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study, there were 88 people with uncontrolled hypertension. The participants took either 1.2 g of aged garlic extract or a placebo every day for 12 weeks. The researchers evaluated their blood pressure, cholesterol, homocysteine levels, platelet function, and inflammatory markers.

Overall, the garlic reduced systolic blood pressure by 11.5 points and diastolic blood pressure by 6.3 points compared to the placebo group, which was reduced by less than .001. The garlic also had beneficial effects on some inflammatory markers, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and apolipoproteins. As importantly, the extract did not seem to have any unpleasant side effects.

These are impressive results. It suggests that aged garlic extract is effective in reducing peripheral and central blood pressure in a large proportion of patients with uncontrolled hypertension. And it has the potential to improve arterial stiffness, inflammation, and other cardiovascular markers in people with elevated blood pressure levels. Aged garlic extract is usually easy to tolerate with a high safety profile as a stand-alone or adjunctive antihypertensive strategy. If you have mildly high blood pressure, garlic can work very well.
