Last week, I told you how important it is to add salmon or other oily fish to your diet to make sure you get enough omega-3 fats. Some people might think this is an endorsement of all seafood. It’s not! In fact, most seafood is toxic. But you won’t hear that from the FDA.
After the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the Food and Drug Administration told us that the seafood from that area was safe. As a result, millions of people ate those fish and shellfish. But the FDA never should have said it was safe.
The Natural Resources Defense Council found that some of the seafood from the area was 10,000 times too high in toxins! Even now, more than 15 months since they stopped the leak, the fish from the region are still toxic.
Remember, the fish from the Gulf of Mexico are warm-water fish. So they were already high in contaminants, especially mercury. I’ve warned you for years to eat only cold-water fish, such as wild trout and salmon. But the oil spill added even more contaminants to the water. And the fish.

The biggest concern is polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Most of the time, we see these powerful pollutants in the air when we burn coal and oil. But the oil spill added them to the water in the Gulf. PAHs can cause gene and cell mutations, which significantly increase your cancer risk.
It’s appalling the FDA would allow this food on the market. The agency proves once again that you have to take responsibility for your own health and protect yourself as best you can. That means eating only wild cold-water fish and making sure your body is free from contaminants.
