Last week, I showed you how vegetables protect your immune system from breaking down. But that’s not all vegetables can do. There’s new research out that suggests broccoli and other veggies could save your life if you have COPD.
COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is a lung condition that can result from exposure to cigarette smoke and air pollution. It affects 24 million Americans and is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. The typical treatment is steroids, which have anti-inflammatory properties.
While steroids can stop an acute respiratory attack, they lose their effectiveness over time. Steroids also do not improve survival rates. And they can’t stop the progression of COPD. What’s worse, the lungs eventually become insensitive to the steroids. And some people experience a reduction in symptoms of only 20%. That’s not enough to survive COPD.
However, a new study out of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, made an interesting discovery about sulforaphane – an ingredient of broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and other vegetables. They found that it not only supports your immune system, it can also improve the effectiveness of corticosteroids.

The researchers found that sulforaphane restored lung sensitivity to the steroids. That makes the drugs work more effectively.
This is just one more reason to include vegetables in the brassica family every day you can. They can help stop an acute respiratory attack by making the steroids work better. And, by making your lungs more sensitive to the steroids, you won’t need as much to treat COPD. They can literally save your life.
