Here’s where vitamin D comes to the rescue. It strengthens bone tissue and halts the loss of cartilage, slowing the progression of osteoarthritis. It keeps agonizing bone spurs from forming.
Plus it prevents the thinning of joint tissue that leads to excruciating bone-on-bone contact. Vitamin D even keeps your muscles strong and pain-free.
Studies prove vitamin D can reduce pain and improve your mobility. Researchers at the Tufts-New England Medical Center and Boston University School of Public Health recently conducted a two-year trial on 100 people in their 60s. All of them had knee pain.
They discovered 47% of them were deficient in vitamin D. This deficiency contributed to their pain and difficulty walking. In fact, the lower their levels of vitamin D, the slower they walked — and the greater their pain!
The hidden deficiency that attacks your knees and other joints
If you suffer from knee arthritis — or you’re worried about getting it — then you need to make sure you’re not deficient in vitamin D. Most of us don’t get anywhere near enough of this crucial vitamin.
Even if you take a multivitamin each day that contains vitamin D, you could have a deficiency. That’s because the vast majority of multivitamins only give you the bare minimum.
They don’t give you the higher amounts you need as you get older. Nor do they make up for the vitamin D you’re probably not getting from direct sunlight.
These days, you’re being told to slather on sunscreen every time you’re outdoors in order to prevent skin cancer. The problem is, sunscreen blocks your body’s ability to make vitamin D by 95% or more.
Meanwhile, as you get older your skin doesn’t convert vitamin D from the sun as easily into the form your body uses. In fact, as many as 70% of older adults are deficient in vitamin D.
Even if you eat a healthy diet, you still may not get enough vitamin D. Few foods contain this vitamin naturally. Milk is fortified with vitamin D, but you’d have to drink ten tall glasses a day just to get the minimum recommended levels. What’s more, studies suggest these levels are woefully inadequate, especially for older adults!
Now you can stop arthritis pain — for one-fourth

That’s why if you want to save your knees — and enjoy the other vast health benefits of vitamin D — you need to get it from supplements. And you probably need to take a lot more vitamin D than you do now.
How much? I recommend you take 5,000 IU each day. This may seem like a lot, but it’s not. It’s about the same amount of vitamin D you’d get from spending 10 to 20 minutes in the sun, depending on where you live and how fair-skinned you are.
But most of us don’t get that much daily exposure to the sun every day of the year. That’s why it’s so important to get your daily supplement “insurance.” You also want to make sure you take the right kind of vitamin D — vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), the natural form. This is the form your body makes on its own, so it’s better absorbed and gives you greater support.
Even in its natural form, vitamin D is relatively cheap. You’d only spend about 14 cents a day or less to get my recommended amount. That’s less than one-fourth the cost of a typical glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate supplement.

But the truth is, taking NSAIDs can end up making your joint problems even worse. In a recent study at Indiana University, researchers found that NSAIDs interfere with the healing of torn ligaments.
This slows down your body’s natural joint repair process, and makes it harder for your joints to return to normal after you get injured or overdo it.
Why do NSAIDs have this effect on your joints? Because these anti-inflammatory drugs, as their name implies, reduce inflammation. But in order for your ligaments to become stronger as they heal, you actually need to increase inflammation.

Why you could be taking plenty of vitamin D — and still suffer a deficiency
Hundreds of studies have proved the health benefits of vitamin D. Yet many of us are still not getting enough of this crucial vitamin from the sun, food, or supplements to prevent disease.
For starters, the government’s current recommended daily amounts are woefully inadequate. They claim you need only 200 IU if you’re age 50 or younger, 400 IU if you’re 51 to 70, and 600 IU if you’re 71 or older — even though study after study shows you need at least 1,000 IU or more to see any kind of benefit.
Take, for example, a recent study published involving 1,167 healthy women with an average age of 67. Those women who took 1,000 IU of vitamin D were 60% less likely to develop cancer over the next four years than those who took a placebo. That means they cut their cancer risk by more than half!
You can see why it’s so important to get high enough amounts of vitamin D. But you also have to make sure you’re getting the right kind. All of the studies you keep hearing about used the form of vitamin D known as D3 or cholecalciferol. It’s the same kind of vitamin D your body makes when you’re exposed to the sun.
However, many popular multivitamins — including Centrum Silver® and One-A-Day® — and some calcium/vitamin D supplements substitute a weaker, cheaper version. It’s known as D2, or ergocalciferol (you’ll often find it buried in the ingredient list).
Multiple studies, including one published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, have found vitamin D3 to be more potent than D2 in humans. In fact, one study dating back to the 1950s found vitamin D3 to be up to four times as potent as vitamin D2.
Since D3 is what’s used in studies, that’s the form you want to take — otherwise you risk ending up with a deficiency and shortchanging your health.

Chances are, you’ve been taking steps for years to prevent or slow bone loss. In fact, for as long as you can remember, you’ve been told you need to take more calcium to keep your bones strong.
But one of the most common mistakes I see women make is to take calcium supplements, thinking it’s the best way to get their daily “insurance” for their bones.
Here’s what you need to know: you don’t need to take high quantities of calcium supplements to prevent osteoporosis. You need to get more calcium from your diet!
I’ve been telling women this for years, since research proves calcium from food is better absorbed and used than calcium from pills. Your body absorbs only about 35% of the calcium in most supplements. That means you’re only getting one-third of the support you think you’re getting from the calcium supplements you’re taking!
But when you get most of your calcium from food, you get much greater support — and your bones get stronger and more resistant to fracture. Take a look at the results of a recent clinical trial at the Washington University School of Medicine.
Researchers studied nearly 200 postmenopausal women. They found those women who got most of their calcium from supplements had lower bone density than those who got most of their calcium from their diets.
You can see why you need to get most of your calcium from food to keep your bones strong. But here’s another good reason: taking high doses of calcium supplements could end up causing you other problems. That’s because whatever calcium your body is unable to absorb ends up in other soft body tissues.
For example, excess calcium ends up in your joints — where it causes arthritis. Or it builds up in your arteries — where it causes atherosclerosis (or hardening of the arteries). It can even get stored in other soft body tissues like your kidneys, gallbladder, ears, muscles, and brain.
It’s no wonder an excess build-up of calcium is linked to varicose veins, kidney stones, gallstones, hearing loss, unexplained muscle aches, fibromyalgia, Alzheimer’s, and high blood pressure. In fact, a UCLA study suggests excess calcium build-up raises your risk of stroke!
You can see why I feel so strongly that you not overdo calcium supplements. Now, I’m not throwing the baby out with the bathwater and saying you shouldn’t get any calcium in your supplements. But it’s not the best way to keep your bones strong for life.
The bone-building mineral that works better than calcium to cut your fracture risk by more than HALF
There’s a crucial mineral most women don’t get in food or supplements that’s vital for women to take to maintain strong bones. Studies show this mineral works better than calcium and vitamin D to maintain and increase bone density, even in women who already have osteoporosis!
One three-year study of 1,649 postmenopausal women published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that those who added this mineral to their bone-building program increased the bone density in their backs by 14.4% and in their necks by 8.3%. In contrast, those who took calcium and vitamin D alone saw NO increase in bone density.
A double-digit increase in bone density is practically unheard of, even when it comes to costly conventional therapies that bring with them unwanted (and often dangerous) side effects. But this safe, natural bone-building mineral does even more.
It can cut your risk of fracture by more than HALF. That’s right, I said half! Nothing else, not even calcium, comes close. In fact, a recent double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 1,488 women found that those taking this mineral cut their risk of fracture by 59% within the first year.
Pretty amazing, isn’t it? Especially when you take into account this study only involved women between the ages of 80 and 100. It goes to show that no matter what your age, it’s never too late to dramatically reduce your fracture risk and increase your bone density.

You, too, may have started to notice certain foods you used to eat without any problem no longer agree with you. As a result, you may find yourself reaching for digestive enzymes — or antacids like Tums® — when you suffer from indigestion, gas, or other stomach problems.
But these quick fixes don’t repair the underlying cause. They just treat your symptoms. You could end up taking enzymes or antacids for the rest of your life, and keep having the same problems.
Once I started looking into my own digestive problem and found no serious underlying cause, I quickly came to some answers in Oriental medicine. I discovered my indigestion was a sign of age-related sluggish digestion. My body wasn’t producing enough enzymes to break down and use my foods. Here’s why...
According to Oriental medicine, your body requires a certain amount of “heat” in order for your digestion to become energized and run smoothly.
When you eat too much, eat late at night, feel rushed when you eat, or eat when you’re stressed, your body produces less digestive heat. Drinking cold beverages with meals, eating cold foods like salads, or ending a meal with a cold dessert like fruit or ice cream can also have the same effect.

However, you may not always want to eat a diet consisting of cooked, warm foods. Sometimes a salad is just what you want for lunch or dinner. And who can pass up a bowl of berries, a ripe peach, or a slice of watermelon on a summer day?
But you can warm up sluggish digestion and still eat cold foods occasionally. The answer is to use heat-producing spices like cardamom, cumin, coriander, and fennel seed whenever possible.
These spices stimulate your digestive system so you digest your food more easily. They also increase the production of enzymes and stomach acids that typically decline with age and illness.
Other spices, like cinnamon, pomegranate seed, and lesser galangal root, act as anti-fungals.
