If you're having trouble losing weight or keeping it off, then I have amazing news for you: New research shows that there's a 90% chance your problem is due to a hidden nutritional deficiency.

That's right, 90%. I know it sounds hard to believe. But the latest research proves it. And so does my experience with my own patients. When we run lab tests, 9 out of 10 women test positive for this deficiency. And when we correct the deficiency, these women not only lose weight, but they keep it off permanently!

So what is this deficiency that prevents you from losing weight? It's a deficiency of iodine.

Yes, iodine. As a knowledgeable reader of health information, you may already know about iodine. You may already know that it's vital for your thyroid. And you may already know that when your thyroid's not functioning properly, you gain weight.

But here's something you may not know: Today's environment makes it almost impossible to get the amount of iodine you need!

First of all, there's very little iodine in the soil. So unless you're eating a ton of iodine-rich foods like kelp, seaweed and shellfish, you're not going to get much iodine from your diet.

Second, many salt companies have stopped adding iodine to table salt.

Third, food manufacturers have stopped using iodine in baked goods and are using bromine instead.

You see, both bromine and iodine are what are known as halogens. They have similar chemical properties. They also attach to the same receptors in your cells.

That means that bromine competes with iodine to get into your cells. So the more bromine you consume, the less iodine you get. Unfortunately, many foods today (primarily baked goods) are loaded with bromine.

Fourth, our water supply contains chlorine and fluoride, both of which are — you guessed it — halogens. So they, too, compete with iodine to get into your cells.

And you can't avoid chlorine and fluoride simply by drinking filtered water. That's because you get a hefty dose any time you bathe, shower, soak in a hot tub, or swim in a swimming pool.

Fifth, most conventional doctors never test for iodine deficiency. They figure there's no need to test iodine levels when they can just test your thyroid function instead.

The problem with this is that the most widely used thyroid test, the TSH, is wildly inaccurate. Reason: While the TSH measures thyroid hormone, it can't tell the difference between active thyroid hormone with iodine and de-activated thyroid hormone with bromine or chlorine or fluorine! So the test shows you have plenty of thyroid hormone. But most of the thyroid hormone isn't doing its job!

I've had women come into my office who look like the poster child for underactive thyroid. They're overweight, they're losing their hair and eyebrows, their skin is dry, and they tell me they feel cold all the time. Yet when their doctor gave them a thyroid test, it came back normal!

Why Astronauts Are Prone to Osteoporosis

Here on earth, gravity is a constant force for your muscles and bone to push against. Thanks to gravity, you're helping your bones every time you walk, lift groceries out of your car, or play with your grandchildren.

But in space, there is no gravity. Because of this, astronauts on extended space missions lose up to 1% of their bone mass each month. That's 10 times faster than you and me!

To counter this bone loss, astronauts exercise every day. But you can't lift weights in space — they don't weigh anything! So instead, astronauts do a variety of isometric resistance movements that put force on their bones to counteract the bone loss that would normally occur in space.

And boy, do they work! In a recent study, 57 postmenopausal women did 10 simple movements that lasted 5 seconds each. It took just 10 minutes a day, and they never had to leave the comfort of their homes. After only one month, nearly three-quarters of the women had increased their back strength by a whopping 26%!

But that's not all. In a separate study, researchers had 21 different women with osteoporosis or osteopenia do the same simple movements. Once again, the total "workout" (including warm-up and cool-down) took just 10 minutes. The scientists measured bone formation by checking levels of alkaline phosphatase, an important marker that indicates bone is being made.

In less than two months, the women in the study saw their levels rise over 7%. That's remarkable when you realize that the average post-menopausal woman loses between 3% to 9% of bone mass every year!

By the way, the women on this study didn't change medications or add hormone therapy or other exercises. The only difference was that they did these 10 simple movements.

Instead, I chose to focus on prevention.

I exercised, ate right, and took supplements. I managed the stress in my life. I avoided pesticides, synthetic hormone replacement, and other carcinogens. And I performed regular self-exams.

I didn't like the fact that there was no accurate way to detect breast cancer early. But I took comfort in the fact that I was doing everything I could to prevent the terrible disease.

Then I found out about a safe, painless, non-invasive test that detects cancer years earlier than a mammogram. The test is called Breast Thermography, and it works by taking infrared photos of your breasts.

How it Works

When cells begin to turn cancerous, the surrounding tissues start to create new blood vessels. This is called neoangiogenesis. These new blood vessels carry oxygen and nutrients to the newly formed and extremely hungry cancer cells.

All that blood-flow activity produces additional heat in the area. And this heat can be detected using infrared photography. So the theory is that by finding "hot spots" in the breast, you can identify cancer activity early.

But does this theory hold up in the real world? Some skeptical researchers decided to put thermography to the test. They gave thermograms to 58,000 women and recorded the results. Then they monitored those women for 12 years. Here's what happened:

Most of the women got "normal" readings on their thermograms, and the majority of these women remained cancer-free. But in 1,527 of the women, the thermograms recorded abnormal cell activity. Of those women, almost HALF developed breast cancer within 5 years!

Well, you don't have to hit me over the head to get me to see the importance of something like this. I decided to have a thermogram myself, and to write about it in Women's Health Letter.

What Happened Next Shocked Me

There are times in your life when you look back and realize you made a life-saving decision. I believe this was one of them.

When the results of my thermogram came back, they showed "hot spots" in both of my breasts! The doctor told me I had excess estrogen.

I was stunned. I've been postmenopausal for more than a decade, and my recent blood tests showed that my estrogen levels were low. How had they jumped so high?

The answer is that there's a big difference between blood levels of estrogen and the levels in your breast. Your breast tissue actually produces estrogen, which means you can have a lot of estrogen in your breasts even when you have very little in your blood.

In my case, the extra estrogen was causing precancerous changes in my breasts. These changes would not have shown up on a mammogram for years. But with thermography, I was able to pick up the problem at its earliest and most treatable stage.

When I found out about the hot spots in my breast, I was frightened. But I was also grateful. I felt as though I was given a chance to save my own life.
